Passable Garbo Film - Anna Christie
18 March 2022
This is one of Greta Garbo's earlier films, and she delivers the goods as Anna Christie as she lays down the foundation of several of her later films; the distant beauty who is above all that is going around her. This persona worked for Garbo for over a decade. This film is not as good as later pieces (especially Grand Hotel), but is passable and worth viewing for Garbo. The film does capture, however, the grim realities of the Great Depression, and has that rare atmosphere that only Depression-era films contain. Worth viewing for the Garbo performance and interactions with her father and her new sailor boyfriend.
