The Sound of the Intensity

"No Intenso Agora" is a documentary that narrates the events of the French May '68 from a personal perspective, through the use of a film record taken from his mother on a trip to China, and a historical archive of the height of the situation in France; the documentary explores the fleeting nature of historical moments of great intensity, with the use of the discursive thought the director's voice, which one serves as the thread of the structure, playing between the historical and the personal narrative.

That is why it stands out in this film, it is his sound proposal that gives strength to an idea that Joao mentions: "De Gaulle reappeared now as the legendary voice that had commanded the liberation of France in the Second War. He chose the radio because he knew that in the afternoon few people would be in front of the TV, but also so as not to show the old face. Now it was just voice, just strength".

The power of the voice, a resource that De Gaulle used to find support in the French bourgeoisie and that put an end to the protests, by not showing his old and tired face. But Joao also used it throughout the documentary, using it as a metaphor for the power of sound, or simply of his voice; and this in an intentional and even ironic way for this documentary that by its tone becomes reflective. De Gaulle has a position of power, and with his radio voiceover he silenced the protests. Joao, as director, has within the film a position of power, and he decided when to silence and when to give voice to the characters or situations, making use of his own discourse. He makes us realize how the political game of protest junctures is, using his sound proposal, the tone with which he writes and directs his monologue, and how it summarizes the fate of many protests.

This is a film that anyone who has participated and believed in the student movement in their own country should see and listen to.
