I knew nothing about this movie other than it was Swedish and was nominated for an Oscar (which I assumed was in the Foreign Language category). As soon as it started I was surprised and somewhat badly impressed by what was clearly a woman under very heavy make-up. The design of the make-up was good, but there was something about the execution that threw me off (I later found out that it was nominated for its make-up). The movie itself was very bizarre and was more the kind of movie you see in a genre festival than at the Oscars, but as it progressed it started to win me over as it was a very original take on a Nordic mythology. The two leads are very good, conveying a certain weirdness that is needed for their roles and it has some good moments, including an unforgettable sex scene that makes this movie very unique.
