Hellraiser (1987)
8/10
Twisted Tale of Romance

You probably know Hellraiser as the Pinhead movie. Which is interesting, since he's in the film so little.

Hellraiser on it's own is about a man named Frank, who tries to escape the twisted sexual punishments of the "Cenobytes" a group of BDSM demons that can be summoned by a bizarre cube. Frank tries to escape the demons by feasting on the blood of others, each time growing his body back.

Hellraiser's pacing truly is it's best feature. It knows when to hold back and when to show off creepy visuals. The beginning of the film feels like a horror film with a lot of hardwork behind it, but later becomes. Dark twisted fantasy film, and the transition is seamless. That's the best part of Hellraiser and Clive Barker in general. He's very good at not showing all his cards at once.

Of course, Hellraiser is not perfect. Some of the lines are real cringe and none of the actors are anything special (except the guy who plays Pinhead, who was giving it his all). Their performance generally doesn't degrade the film, but there are some scenes that fall flat because of it.

But with a few mistakes, Hellraiser is definitely worth a watch. It's a memorable experience that you should experience at least once.
