When 'Phineas and Ferb' first started to air, Disney Channel was nowhere near as good as it used to be and still isn't. Instead of the likes of the animated Disney shows of the 80s and 90s, most of it was and still is animated shows with childish humour and Disney Channel sitcoms and unfortunately it tended to not be the good ones. This continued throughout the whole of 'Phineas and Ferb's' run to the extent that this became one of the few shows airing on the Channel worth watching.
One of the best 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes for me is "Wizard of Odd". The premise alone is absolutely ingenious and unique for 'Phineas and Ferb', with the show having not parodied a literature classic to this extent since "The Monster of Phineas n Ferbenstein" with 'Frankenstein'. 'The Wizard of Oz' is parodied to genius effect while also being distinctively 'Phineas and Ferb', being massively entertaining, joyously odd and clever while also having a good deal of heart.
Everything here is brilliant. The animation is still wonderfully vibrant with very rich attention to detail. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to.
Furthermore, the writing is a triumph. The dialogue is sharp and intelligent, with plenty of laugh-out-loud lines and witty exchanges. The gags are many and they are beautifully timed and never less than very amusing, all without being too manic or lacking in breathing space. The referencing is also on point, instantly recognisable, very funny and nostalgic and the placement never feels random or indulgent. Although the story triumphs on the entertainment value and having so much energy, it also succeeds on the charm and heart factors.
Candace's character writing is beautifully done, despite her intentions of busting her brothers it is great from time to time to see episodes that show that she does care for them and where it is made clear why she feels the way she does. The messaging is a great one in the first place and handled with sincere honesty. Along with Candace's development, the other delight in terms of character writing is Doofenschmirtz who is absolutely hilarious in the episode's take of the Wicked Witch of the West. You'd be hard pressed to find a warlock this funny in animation anywhere. The voice acting is excellent.
