Review of Hud

Hud (1963)
7/10
very much of a character study
7 October 2021
I do like very much this modern western and the character study as well. Paul Newman is in this movie the title character, portraying a man in his late 30's who forgot to grow up. When he wasn't working on his small ranch, he was carousing and drinking and flirting with some female in the nearby small town, and this seemed to be all he lived for.

But I will have to say that I did not like the type of person Melvyn Douglas portrayed when he acted the part of his bitter father even though Douglas was an accomplished actor in this movie. He admitted to his face that he could not stand Hud, and never had. Therefore, I couldn't help but wonder if his father was not one of the main reasons his son became what he did.

No, I did not really like the father in this movie.

Patricia Neal was excellent as the appealing housemaid Emma, someone whom Hud's nephew liked very much. Brandon deWilde did come across well as that laid-back teenager. He came to her aid one night when Hud was beating he mercilessly.

While the movie had very little of a plot, it was, again, very much of a character introspection. This was its strongest point, and possibly draws the movie to people's attention. Mainly for that reason and the modern west setting I did like it.
