Our introduction to Gentleman Jack Darby
7 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
And the beginning of a long steady TV career for Richard Long, perfect as the lighthearted con man Gentleman Jack Darby. His introduction is memorable, as he convinces the law that Bart Maverick is really Jack Darby and collects the bounty on himself. It turns out Jack is trying to raise enough money to give his girl, (Arlene Howell as Cindy Lou), the introduction to New Orleans high society she craves. But Jack kills Little Jeb Plummer (Charlie Briggs) when Jeb accuses him of cheating at poker, and then he has to go on the run. Meanwhile, Bart is in jail as Jack Darby, until he gets out and joins the chase.

The second half of the episode bogs down as Bart and Cindy hide out from Indians, but things pick up again when Bart kills another Plummer who mistakes him for Jack and then finds Jack playing poker and gets his money back. In time for him and Jack to shoot it out with the remaining Plummers. Jack pulls a slick move on Bart and makes off with all his money, only to have Bart track him down as he is delivering on his promise to Cindy.

Great first half, not so much second half, cute finale. Richard Long makes this episode worth watching - a talented actor who could play a genuinely nasty and even slimy bad guy, or an heroic good guy, and he always got the lighthearted bad guy like Jack nailed solid.
