I will admit that if you were expecting a historical account - this series is not for you. I watched the first two seasons for pure entertainment, and at times it did border on nonsensical.
Which brings me to season three, eight episodes of utter crap - the show added Sophie Okonedo as a main character - firstly the whole storyline with her, the groupies, the son and cannibalism was unnecessary. Aulus' devotion to his master could have been shown as a flashback in a single episode. Next Sophie's portrayal of her character was so annoying you'll want to turn off the TV every time she appears on screen.
The terrible third season ruined the entire series for me I probably don't have to say I will not watch the fourth season because I doubt there will be one!
