The Pilgrim (1923) : Brief Review -

Hilarious Chaplin with tactical understanding in the formula generating dramedy. You remember that formula no, a convict/criminal escapes and is misidentified as some other gentleman in new city, he begins new life and then meets his old mate to heroically save the good people from his evil minded mate. I guess, it was generated here. I have seen the same the formula in many films, not just Hollywood but many bollywood and other regional films too. Knowing that it was invented in early 20s by legend Chaplin is a big addition in my knowledge of cinema, today. Well, as we all the story here's a brief. The Tramp is an escaped convict who is mistaken as a pastor in a small-town church. From the title expected quite a tough film at first but then i also knew that it's a Charlie Chaplin film afterall. How can he go without any laughter. He does it in his style and additionally establishes some great comic scenes. As an actor and comedian he shines, no doubts but he does not shine alone. That is, he as a director makes others characters involved in this fun ride. So it is not one man show, but two men show- one Chaplin as an actor and two Chaplin as a director. That entire naughty kid scene left me in aww. I had laugh but I was surprised to see the execution. I mean he was just a little child and you took long shots from him. How? This can't be rehearsed because the child can't act same in every scene and then you see 40 seconds long shots and the child is doing everything so perfectly or was it made to look perfect? I don't know but it wasn't edited for sure. That's where Chaplin the genius won me over. I had to admit that it wasn't an easy job for anybody, and for early 20s with less techniques available for filmmaking, it was just fabulous. Overall, The Pilgrim offers a satisfying Charlie Chaplin standard comedy with enough drama hence, a Dramedy. Watch it for that formula you have loved for years in other films.
