On release, there were some very impressive features including plenty of colour, excellent sound, and overall game play. Controls are simple, intuitive, objective is clear which is a great lure for someone wandering an arcade for the first time. "I can do this!" which later turned into "it's on like Donkey Kong!" for good reason. The goal is achievable to reach your princess, then the game steps it up a notch to see where your break-point is on repeating.
Although the controls are fairly smooth, there are a few 'sticking points' like at the top of a ladder or a jump that doesn't quite happen the way that it should. Not a lot of story in Donkey Kong, but nevertheless satisfying when succeeding.
