10/10
An appropriate score for the captain, no. 10
21 June 2021
Most people are not Roma fans. But you don't need to be to appreciate this gem of a mini series. If you love football, this is for you. Beautifully portrayed and produced with healthy doses of humour, it tracks the Captain's last season as a player, the disharmony with the coach, the support of his family and the adoration of his fans who take hero worship to new and sometimes scary levels. There are many moments of his early career which are told in brief flashback episodes but always in context and always just brief enough to make the point without labouring it. The series is neatly bookended by the view of a passionate fan whose whole life it seems revolves around Totti. We all have our sporting idols but after watching this, you might find room for one more.

Hats off to the whole cast for sublime performances, to the writers for making it so entertaining and the producers for not skimping on production values. And keep the Kleenex handy for the finale.
