I was genuinely excited about this show coming out, especially with how great Cobra Kai turned out. However, in my opinion, this show does not measure up to the first two movies. I don't know if it is supposed to though. Comparing something new to the past can sometimes be unfair.
I think the actual hockey games lack the suspense we got from the games in the movies. Maybe it's because the games weren't as meaningful in the show. Trying to prove your worth against a buffoon coach with no charisma just doesn't have the same appeal as beating Bombay's old legendary coach or an intimidating international powerhouse in the goodwill games.
The team's ascension from unskilled nobodies to a basically unbeatable cohesive unit was not very believable. Bombay coming in to help later on was nice but it never really felt like his team.
Speaking of Bombay, it was pretty disappointing how much of a low life he was first the first few episodes. That's not at all what I expected to see. Glad he eventually came around.
The Ducks coach was a total idiot. He may have built a winning program but he completely lacks character and likability. Sometimes he was funny because of how dumb he was but they should have made him more intimidating.
Some of the characters on the show were interesting though. I'd give season 2 a shot still.
