Review of Yasuke

Yasuke (2021)
7/10
So close to greatness

Warning: Spoilers
If this was a fully fleshed out 12 episode season I believe it could have been something special. Loosely based on historical events the anime had a distinct charm that was infectious throughout the first couple of episodes.

Although I wasn't expecting magic, robots and monster the hyper-fantasy setting seemed to oddly fit amongst the turbulent chaos of feudal Japan. Don't let the fantasy elements turn you away, Yasuke is still a show worth watching.

The first two episodes set the show up spectacularly. However, due to the rushed timeframe of 6 episodes, I think a few key worldbuilding and character development elements were missing. The Flying Lotus soundtrack is fantastic and Mappa does an incredible job on the animation. The anime set itself up for something spectacular early, but the fast-paced nature of the show seemed to be its downfall.

Yasuke wanted to do everything, and with more time I think it could have done these elements extremely well. I didn't understand the motive of the villain, or who exactly they were, and the ending seemed to end faster than it came around.

The first few episodes of Yasuke are brilliant, and if the show continued at this pace for the season I firmly believe it would have been something special. The magical and fantasy elements of Yasuke were not the things that let this anime down, but rather it was its pacing.

I'm a little perplexed an anime of this calibre was limited to only six episodes, and I'm disappointed it didn't have the time it deserved to tell its story.

However, Yasuke is still a show worth watching. It may not be the most cohesive 6 episodes ever, but it is still one full of charm, great characters, exceptional animation and a fantastic soundtrack.
