"The Cheerleader Murders" is a mystery that has little to do with cheerleaders and everything to do with a curse felt by the protagonist Ellie Davis. As a student at San Vicente High School, Ellie is still suffering from the trauma of the violent deaths of her sister and father. Now, two of her fellow students are murdered. Ellie takes it upon herself to find the perpetrator and end the curse.

The filmmakers developed an interesting set of characters around Ellie and incorporated effective outdoor location filming the orange groves of California. The actresses playing Ellie and her mother Jane really looked like a mother and daughter.

There was very little action at the school. Ellie's married chemistry teacher is having an affair with Coach Reeves. But the focal point of the action revolves around an apparently deserted house in the middle of the orange groves. It is there that Ellie's friend Dee James is being held hostage. Ellie's actions may have been foolhardy, but she was desperate in discovering the whereabouts of her friend.

Ultimately, a sizable list of suspects is narrowed down to Ellie's boyfriend, the star quarterback, Nicholas Ryder. But one of the key admissions of Nicholas to Ellie is that he somehow feels that his father would be better off without him in his life. This strange statement was the key revelation that would eventually lead to the true identity of the killer on the loose.

This well-paced and well-acted film was built around a sensitive lead character who genuinely believed that she was cursed. Throughout her ordeal, Ellie Davis maintained her courage and tenacity to overcome adversity to discover redemption and peace.
