This zany yet elegaic war film is pitched somewhere between Catch 22 and Apocalypse Now, but sadly ends up much closer to The Ninth Configuration. Lots of lovely little moments of either witty dialogue or lush cinematography, but they never add up to anything coherent or meaningful, and we never get to know or understand any of the characters, who for the most part remain contradictory comic props for a story that never really takes off.
There are occasional gaps in narrative which makes me think it might have been edited down from a longer film, but I highly doubt putting any lost bits back in would make it any easier to follow.
