Review of Chains

Blackadder II: Chains (1986)
Season 1, Episode 6
9/10
Solid finish to an excellent second series

Blackadder and Melchett are kidnapped whilst Queen Elizabeth receives ransom demands for their release.

I enjoyed this episode for sharp dialogue and the performances of Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Tim McInnerny, Hugh Laurie and Miranda Richardson.

The story isn't massively strong with two separate sequences overlapped and switching from the dungeon to the palace. The sequence with Blackadder, Melchett and Prince Ludwig is much higher quality with some fabulous banter between the three. The scenes with Queen Elizabeth, Lord Percy, Baldrick and Nursie are okay, but mainly because Percy is so entertaining.

Rowan Atkinson gives one of his best performances in this episode with some fantastic delivery whilst being tortured by a Spanish guard and back and forth with Hugh Laurie. Stephen Fry also contributes very well with Melchett showing some real true colours.

The other sequence is poor by Blackadder standards, with Tony Robinson largely wasted along with Patsy Byrne. Tim McInnerny and Miranda Richardson are better, particularly McInnerny but they haven't got the strongest material to work with.

Overall I'll be generous and give it an 8.5/10 because Atkinson is so good every time he is on camera.
