You can see that his friends try to save him- just like family and loved ones try to save a drug addict from falling into the pits, but the addict doesn't listen. In a similar fashion, he is addicted to his lust then followed by love. He is in madness about her and that's an addiction and that ends up being his end. I really like the movie as a grownup, hated it as a teenager when it came out because didn't really understand it.
