Review of Hacksaw

Hacksaw (2020)
Slasher has good intentions but poor execution

Warning: Spoilers
If I am to be honest, I will start with the positives. I liked the homage to the original texas chainsaw. Most of the movie felt like the 1970s and the style seemed unique. Ashley and Tommy had chemistry and their relationship was believable. The movie had several exterior shots that I favored. My favorite part was Ashley getting grabbed after they entered the building. I actually got chills for how real that part felt.

However, the rest of the movie was pretty upsetting to watch. I can handle some shock value, but I found myself disgusted with too much gore. Hacksaw left nothing to my imagination and there were parts that made me feel sick. I do wish the film as a whole was more polished for the comfort of audiences. Most of the color was flat and dialogue was hard to hear at times. Pacing seemed to drag from one scene to the next, leaving me waiting anxiously for the finale. Running at a near 70 minutes, this film could probably knock off 20+ minutes and been slightly more enjoyable.

I like the intent of the movie too much to score it a 1, but the whole movie was sloppy. The technical misses made me feel like I was watching a cut too rough for festivals, much less a streaming distribution.

I do hope Hacksaw is appreciated by the very small and specific niche that exists, but I would not recommend it to casual viewers, especially film critics or those with a weak stomach.
