THX 1138 (1971)
9/10
Still fascinates - but for old & new reasons.

I grew up on Sci-fi & horror movies and THX 1138 was an early favourite - The fact that it was an early GL added to the intrigue, but I always found the film to be worth a watch, no matter who created it.

Robert Duvall is excellent as the titular focus, and occupies the white space with ease - the supporting cast is excellent and actually very believable in this dystopian future world.

For me there are several things that make this an outstanding movie.

The soundscape is pure 70s brilliance - weird static vocals and futuristic sounding vehicles - the highlights - create a mood that I havent really found in other movies and linger long after the credits have rolled.

Stunning cinematography and a creative use of a relatively small budget combine to serve up another unique feast for the eyes.

The pace of the film is perfect, allowing you to experience the slighlty shifted, tilted world and the final shot is one of my favourites in cinema.

On top of this, we also have the questionable decision by GL to go back and add CGI - not my preference - I enjoyed the movie in its original form, but it is a great talking point and an insight into his mind.

very much a student film writ large, but handled with a skill and maturity that hints at future greatness.
