Too Much Distraction

Warning: Spoilers
My first thought about this movie is that you could pretty much cut out half of it and it would still make sense. In fact, half of the movie just seems to be people rolling around of bed naked (including David Bowie), and it really doesn't seem to add anything to the movie. Okay, you could say that about porn, but this movie, while bordering on it, doesn't exactly fall into the category. In fact, I'm just wandering whether those scenes were added as some form of filler.

Well, the movie is about how this alien from a planet that is suffering from drought comes to Earth to bring water back. He starts off by setting up a hugely profitable corporation using patents that he has brought with him, however I suspect the story is about how he ends up getting distracted, and eventually gets stuck on Earth not knowing about what happened back on his home world.

In a way one could say that this film explores how aspects of our world eventually entrap us and distract us from more important things. In Thomas' case, he is on a mission to save his world, but he eventually becomes side tracked, first with a woman, and then with alcohol. In a way his memories of the world from which he came from seem to get ever more distant. Then again, he does attempt to leave, but it seems that every time he attempts to leave he is either distracted, or prevented. One could also suggest that throughout the movie he becomes ever more human, but that is actually the one thing he doesn't want to do.

One thing though is that the movie isn't particularly all that clear with some of the events. Like about halfway through his company is violently taken over by some organisation, an organisation that had been watching him right from the beginning. Moreso they seem to be probing him, trying to find out more about him, yet are obvious as to his true nature. Then again, it is also clear that they end up becoming board with him.

It is a rather sad film, and also one that doesn't paint humanity is a particularly good light. Sex and alcohol are painted as being rather destructive, and distracting, moving Thomas away from his ultimate goal. Sure, he does change the world, but we also see a world that is suspicious, and greedy, and also pretty corrupting. It is a somewhat confronting film, though in the end I felt that it could be change somewhat to remove some of the more extraneous parts and replace it with aspects that help us understand what is going on a bit more.
