A Flask of Fields Among Songs Of The Era
15 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, for those who want to rewrite history this is no longer politically correct. Rewriting our history and saying your sorry is not a bright thing to do. We learn from our mistakes, and forgetting them only makes us repeat them. The Death Camps are still in Europe and hopefully Black Lives Matter doesn't try to loot them.

In the case of this film, the Cabin Kids sing a song and do a duet with Crosby. Der Binger does several songs, and some acting too. W.C. Fields is more energetic in this film and actually the Commodore role is perfect for him. Highlights include Crosby and the Cabin Kids doing "Swanee River" after Fields insults the song saying no one will ever remember it.

The Coomodore's river boat (in this remake) has some talent but is looking for a singer. He hears Crosby at his engagement party singing and tries to hire him. Crosby's engagement winds up short as he is challenged to a duel by someone he's never met, but his fiancee has. Meanwhile, his fiancee has a little sister(Joan Bennett) whose sweet on Bing (Tom Grayson). Gail Patrick (Elvira) drops Grayson like a hot potato when he will not defend her honor. Grayson then leaves the mansion that looks like a house used in a lot of Paramont films.

Tom signs a contract with the Commodore (Fields) who runs a rowdy riverboat. There is a one of a kind poker game here where everybody is cheating - every players has 4 Aces except Fields(Commodore Jackson) who has 5 of them, and keeps throwing away aces and draws 4 more. This leads to a shooting. This is where Tom starts his lessons on being tough and soon becomes the "killer" singer.

While the Commodore repeats his Indian fighting story several times, it is just one of many punchlines the great Fields gets into this one. One throw a way line to listen for - "Women are like Elephants. I like to look at some of them, but I wouldn't want to own one."

This movie is aging, but still entertaining. There was a version on DVD a few years ago I failed to get, but I found it free on You Tube for those who want to look at it. I am not sure all the scenes are in this one, but it's good enough.
