The best parts don't take place in the main room
12 July 2020
The best thing about LOL: Australia is the commentary from the contestants when they take the time to break down what happened, and what works, what should work, and what definitely doesn't work. The main room where most of the "action" takes place is actually full of antics that are less about humor and more about trying to get some sort of reaction - any reaction - from another contestant. That is to say that much of the comedy just doesn't work. It doesn't work on the other contestants, which is rather the point, but it also doesn't really work for the viewer either. The funniest bits are the quick asides, that are almost throwaway comments, that are unexpected, but witty enough to garner a smile. By the end, the room is a mess that looks like something left over from an 8 year old's birthday party, if that party was at least R - rated, mind you.

The rules don't really matter. Some contestants are called out for the smallest of reactions. Others get away with belly laughter, but remain in the game. In the end, we're left with two, and they engage in a titanic scale bit of weird gamesmanship that goes nowhere. I won't risk spoilers, but I will say that the contestants that don't really participate much and/or sit around and take shots at others end up being a disappointment. Hats off to the contestants that try everything, and I mean literally everything, only to come away empty. Some of these comedians are masters of shamelessness, which is saying something for folks in a profession that features some of the most insecure people on the planet.

The show could use more commentary. The interviews with contestants aren't long enough and don't go deep enough. For a show that really isn't all that funny, it could at least be interesting. The best interviews are the ones near the end of the competition, when the remaining contestants (two of them) really start to break down their strategy and their thought process. It's fascinating. Just not enough of it.

Rebel Wilson does a fine job hosting. I'd watch another season, but would like more of what has a change of working, and less of the outrageous, gross out antics that are easily shrugged off as not funny, just stupid. And finally, more commentary, please.
