A Fateful Knock on the Door

Warning: Spoilers
After five years of anguish when her daughter Katie went missing, Janet Sullivan hears a knock on the door thinking that it an obtrusive reporter. Instead, it is the long-lost Katie who has returned home. "Who Stole My Daughter?" (a.k.a., "Lost and Found") tells the gripping story of Katie's disappearance and her miraculous return.

The strength of the film lies in the details that add up to solving the mystery of the missing Katie. Some of those details are utterly mundane, such as the local Waterford Clam Diggers' decision to bury a time capsule outside the local elementary school.

It turns out the clam shell buried with childhood trinkets includes the evidence that clears up the mystery of Katie. Within that clam shell is a photo chip depicting a figure wearing a jacket with the emblem of Carson University. It is the detail of the university logo on the jacket that will be the clincher.

One of the film's most interesting characters is Roger Chase, a big, tough bruiser who appears to be the perp who abducted Katie. But appearances can be deceiving as the thug turned out to have a conscience. After his parents were murdered in their home in the Louisiana bayou, Roger made the decision to return Katie to her home in Waterford. There resulted the fateful knock on the door, and the rest was history.

One might object to the zombie-like character portrayal of Katie. At one point in the film, it was suggested that she was the victim of Stockholm Syndrome, acquired during the five-year period she was held in captivity. But it turns out that she was treated well by her captor. The trauma had to have come from the horrific incident she witnessed at school when the nice art teacher from Montreal, Miss Broussard, was intent on delivering a child fathered some someone wielding tremendous power.

While Katie is struggling to recover, her mother reminds her of a childhood game when she and Katie were battling monsters. Due to the strength of the mother-daughter bond, monsters do not stand a chance, due to the powers of love and the ability to peel away the layers on the Waterford Clam Diggers time capsule.
