An early scene in "I Killed My BFF" sets the stage for what is to follow. After two women have given birth to babies, they are recovering in adjoining beds in the hospital. When the boyfriend of Heather arrives to meet his new child, Heather orders him to leave. Chase has not done anything wrong, and he refuses to leave. But the other mother, Shane, gets up off her birthing bed to challenge Chase to a fight. Chase then leaves the hospital with a hangdog look on his face. Shane's assertiveness is only a preview of coming attractions in this tawdry story.

One has to feel for the character of Heather, who struggles with bipolar disorder. But she has fallen so much under the spell of her friend Shane that she has lost her own sense of autonomy. The same is true for Shane's boyfriend, Alex, who behaves acts like her lapdog, even when she enlists him in a plot to rob thousands of dollars from his employer.

The best scene in the film is when Shane drives out to have a look at the new music studio that she has helped to finance from the money she and Alex have stolen. But Shane discovers that the building is boarded up and the interior is empty. She has been robbed blind, played as a sucker by an effervescent old "uncle" who has taken her for a ride to the tune of $15,000.

As the film progresses, it becomes even more sordid when Shane coerces Heather into giving her an alibi for the time of the robbery. Shane even pimps out her boyfriend Alex to seduce Heather to keep her happy, until they are cleared of the crime. When Heather finally asserts herself, she is caught in the web of Shane's evil design and eventually murdered in cold blood.

The film was based on a true crime, and it had an eerie feeling of credibility from start to finish. One feels only for the children, little Dylan and Simon, whose parents, Shane and Alex, will be in prison long after they have reached their majority. In the meantime, Heather's little girl Molly is at least in good hands with a caring grandma and the man who nearly had his lights punched out in the hospital by Shane.
