Surprisingly uplifting, "Down Periscope' is more than just another underdogs against the U.S. Navy. The first half shines with comedy, mostly of the slapstick variety. The great cast is what makes the movie work so well. Kelsey Grammer is well supported by Rob Schneider, Bruce Dern, William H. Macy, Rip Torn, and Harry Dean Stanton. It would have been very easy for this to degenerate into a sexist ass grabbing mistake of a film, but it wisely does not. Lauren Holly is certainly a eyeful on board a submarine, however she remains fully clothed, and is an integral part of the second half when the script shifts from farce to pretty engrossing nautical maneuvers. Overall, "Down Periscope" is a very happy movie experience with plenty of laughs. - MERK
