American Horror Story: Rest in Pieces (2019)
Season 9, Episode 8
5/10
Fading down the stretch
8 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode confirmed my fears that the AHS writers have lost their way in the second half of the season. This awkward time jump to 1989 has introduced random new characters that add nothing to the story and have signficantly reduced the screen time of the entertaining characters from the earlier part of the season, this dumb music festival, and DAYTIME slasher scenes, because it's not like 99.9% of all slasher films actually take place at night.

This episode "Rest in Pieces" features some of the worst acting of the entire season in the form of Montana's weird and out-of-nowhere female empowerment speech (and she was batting .999 going into this episode with her zingers), Jingles' annoying holier-than-thou speechifying (remember when he was a scary, silent killer?), this atrocious new Stacy character (talk about monotone exposition), and the 2 poster children of awful acting in 1984: Chet and Donna (do people really think that this actress has actually been good this season? She says all of her lines with the believability of a log).

The 5 stars are for the great and always underrated Dylan McDermott as hilarious serial killer Bruce and his interactions with Richard Ramirez (a solid Zach Villa) and Margaret (the scene-stealing Leslie Grossman). Thankfully, a good chunk of the episode focused on this entertaining dynamic, but not enough to lift it above a 5. In particular, this episode "features" the worst ending of the entire season. With only 1 episode left, I can safely say that 1984 will not end up as in my Top 3 seasons of AHS, and I truly thought this was going to be the case at the halfway point. My, how the tables have turned in just a few episodes!
