Sunny Side Up (1929)
5/10
Notable and nonsensical
28 September 2019
Notable for its ridiculous musical number "Turn On the Heat," this film also serves as a great example of the talents and appeal of Janet Gaynor, one of the most popular and versatile actresses of her time, who retired from films in 1938 at the age of 32. She sings the title tune, which became a real anthem of optimism during the Great Depression: "Keep your sunny side up, hide the side that gets blue." ---Musicals on the Silver Screen, American Library Association, 2013
