James meant this to be a B movie In the vein of Plan 9 from outer space, which happens to be one of his favorite movies of all time and some of the inspiration for his career. He also wanted to mix in aspects of other favorite movies of his like PeeWees Big Adventure and on those fronts he succeeded.
Considering the budget, crew and time he had to make the movie it was pretty damn solid. Sure, it's not the best movie ever, but it was never going to be. The main point is if you're a fan of the nerd character, you should find this movie entertaining. If you were expecting a Hollywood blockbuster, then you just don't understand how movies are made, or understand James AT ALL.
