OK Early Chan
17 June 2019
This was Jackie Chan's release onto the North American market. Along with Robert Clouse (who directed Bruce Lee's ENTER THE DRAGON) you might figure you have something really good here. Problem is it never brings itself up above an alright martial arts movie.

Chan plays Jerry Kwan a young Chinese-American who takes on the mob single-handed (with some help from his trainer Herbert played by Mako) after his father is pressured by some mobsters. Their boss is Dominici played by veteran actor Jose Ferrer. At times is works, but everything is sort of set up for laughs including Chan (whose character is sort of dopey). In the end though Ferrer wants Chan to participate in a huge fight for them.

Lalo Schifrin does the music for the film and I must it is quite good and catchy. Tends to work well with the feel of the film. There are also some good action scenes thanks to Chan.

An interesting note they take part in sort of a roller derby. Seems that the first one took place in Chicago (where this film is supposed to take place) in 1935. Its sort of weird though because it totally screams 1970s to me, but take it as you want to.

Also starring Kristine DeBell as Chan's love interest Nancy who beyond participating in the roller derby does nothing but watch Jackie and Larry Drake who plays a slime-ball judge at the roller derby.
