The Power (1984)
4/10
You can't judge a production manager by his name.

Hoping to find out more about a strange Aztec idol in their possession, three high-schoolers take the artefact to news reporter Sandy (Suzy Stokey), who dismisses their stories of supernatural occurrences and a possible link to a mysterious death. Sandy's friend Jerry (Warren Lincoln) isn't quite so quick to brush them off, taking the idol, promising to investigate it. Soon after, Jerry becomes possessed by the demon Destacatyl, who controls the dark side of the human soul.

For me, the most noteworthy thing about demonic horror The Power is the awesome name of its production manager, Samson Aslanian. One might imagine that anyone blessed with such a magnificent monicker would automatically imbue anything he touches with brilliance, but sadly that is not the case.

The film shows promise early on with a gory impalement, and towards the end features a juicy scene in which Jerry's body splits apart, but everything in between is utterly mundane and instantly forgettable. Hell, it even misses a golden opportunity for a gratuitous shower scene with perky reporter Sandy. Clearly, Samson Aslanian isn't the superhuman being with mighty powers that his name suggests; on the contrary, it would seem that every movie he gets involved with is doomed to failure (he was also production manager on the terrible slasher The Dorm That Dripped Blood, and directed the 1986 thriller Torment, which currently has an IMDb rating of 3.5).
