Sentimental nonsense
10 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ethan's dog Bailey is entreated to look after granddaughter CJ after her mother moves her away from her grandparents. Bailey, reincarnated as Molly (and others) takes the responsibility seriously.

A couple of years ago A Dog's Purpose became the first canine reincarnation-themed movie in existence. As the wold did not leap aboard this new genre, the producers have had to do it themselves. Dog hero Bailey, voiced once again rather well by Josh Gad, gets reincarnated several more times as he seeks to protect CJ against hurt while she loves from babyhood to adulthood.

This film passes over much of the same ground as its predecessor, albeit the story is different. Dennis Quaid is back as Ethan, but Bailey's charge this time is CJ, Quaid's step-granddaughter, played nicely by Kathryn Prescott as an adult and Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie in the Ant-Man movies) as a child.

I found this annoyingly touching in places. It is cheesy nonsense, but it appeals on some sort of sentimental level to those who are prepared to susped disbelief.

Oh, and how fortunate that Bailey manages to get reincarnated in the close vicinity of wherever CJ happens to be at that particular point in time...
