A GREAT SEND OFF FOR STEVE MCQUEEN!
3 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In Tom Horn, Steve McQueen gives a masterful farewell to everyone, not just the Western. Tom Horn is a legend of the west and his case is still in question, and people like Chip Carlson, the filmaker's and myself believe Horn got railroaded. This Western came out when the genre was dying of, just like the setting of the film, 1901-1903. It symbolized men who have outlive their time, which in a lot of ways was like many of the cast members. Steve McQueen would make one more film before his death in 1980 from cancer and this was more of a swansong for McQueen and at the end when Horn tell Sheriff Sam to keep his nerve and Horn himself would his before his death, symbolizes McQueen's goodbye to us before his death later in the year. This fatastic Western also feels like The Shootist, which starred John Wayne, also known for Westerns, who died in 1979, the same year that Tom Horn was filmed, and Steve McQueen would die a year after John Wayne. This film will get you emotionally and it is an underrated masterpiece. Get the dvd and watch it! 10/10 Happy Trails Pilgrims!
