Review of Novine

Novine (2016–2020)

I don't understand all the praise

The series moves at a very slow pace and could have been condensed in fewer episodes. Some drone shots of the city were pretty at first but then they became so overused and were just another thing that slowed the plot down. The screenwriter as a journalist writing about journalism certainly does have a better knowledge of the field but I find it questionable how honest he wants to be with it. Namely, the journalists are portrayed as being very principled when it comes to their work, as if they are all very passionate about it, wanting to do the right thing, and it seems like at least somewhat of an idealisation. The screenwriter also has no previous experience with screenplays and while he is confident he learned everything in few hours, I feel his lack of experience shows. There is a plethora of characters and oftentimes they do not escape from being stereotyped in various ways so I struggled to find someone particularly engaging. Overall the product is sort of passable but the series got fairly hyped and presented as the best local product out there so I certainly feel let down.
