Review of Apostasy

Apostasy (2017)
5/10
Squandered potential

This film has such a rich theme, the Protagonist has captivating internal conflicts, and great naturalism. But the plot becomes so invested with hating on the religion, it abandons character development and even worse, makes such a small effort in pursuing the real conflicts that it raises in the opening act. I was bored by the 2nd half of the film, and also found that there was very little contrast between the main characters.

It would have been nice to see some dimension in the film, I. E. To balance the story by seeing some of the positive sides of the religion as a way to raise the stakes.

The cinematography is great, until the halfway point where the character pov changes radically. In spite of this the camera still tells the same grimey, depressed outlook, and kind of kills the great ambience in the first half of the film.

The film is great for 'show don't tell' and allowing body language to really speak loudly for the first act, but again by the mid point of the film, the pov feels too distant and obscure, instead of allowing us further into the internal pain of the character.
