What you had here was a Goonies/Monster Squad/Stranger Things vibe for much of the movie (kids investigation a mystery) then a big change in the last ten minutes to outright horror. I'm not convinced it was necessary to the story to do that, and it's jarring as you watch it.
The other issue was the total lack of parents, which I know was a trope from the era, but here it is played too far, having parents leave kids alone during circumstances that no parent would ever do so, which made some elements hard to swallow.
Overall a decent movie, not as good as Turbo Kid, but quite watchable nonetheless.
