I don't get all of the ridiculously low ratings and criticism... maybe it's because I didn't read any of the books?
In any case, yes, it doesn't break any new ground. But it provided a season of tense, tight entertainment, if this is a genre that you find appealing.
There, of course, is lots of violence, some of it graphic... but I thought all of the particulars of good visual storytelling were present. Nothing TOO over the top... with good pacing.
And it didn't keep going around in circles like I felt shows like 24 seemed to do... they're captured... they're free...they the captured...free...ad nauseum.
If you're not predisposed to disliking it and are willing to just take it for what it is, I think you'll find yourself agreeing with what I've written here...
