Ice Sharks is worth it.

Note: I streamed this from Hulu on a 4K TV. Great image quality. Good film The film is unrelated to other films called "Snow Sharks" or "Avalanche Sharks."

"Ice Sharks" is one of several movies to come out with the premise of sharks in cold places. While I haven't seen them all, I can't imagine any could be more enjoyable. The film tells a simple story in the style of slasher film.

A group of scientists is studying climate change in the Arctic when the ice melts rapidly and the sharks separate them from the main ice shelf. The sharks pick off victims one by one because there aren't enough actors for your standard shark mayhem.

The film's limited cast is talented enough to keep us interested in their survival. These people are smart and the script doesn't overload us with scientific nonsense the way many Asylum scripts do. Their escape plans are logical for the circumstances so we hope one of them will work. There are only a few cringeworthy moments involving Jenna Parker, the main actress who can't emote when the script calls for it. The film needed a tighter script and a better actress for those moments.

There's some impressive special effects here. Many underwater sequences are filmed with actors in wetsuits swimming in tanks. The sharks look lifelike in the underwater sequences. You'll wish they never left the water. Their on-land appearance is the substandard CGI you're used to seeing if you enjoy these kinds of films. It looks like some puppet work may have been used for close ups of the sharks with added digital makeup.

Ice Sharks is a rare film from The Asylum that takes itself seriously just enough to keep us invested. It has more intentional humor than unintentional. These scientists are all young adults who get horny and risky when left alone. The film was written, edited, and directed by Mr. Emile Smith who seems to have cared for it personally. If you can find it, give it a watch.
