Worth, the penultimate episode for Season 8 is easily my fav thus far as we get paid off for the long awaited showdown between seemingly all seeing and all knowing Negan and bidding his time, hyper ambitious, serial killer and nearly as eloquently loquacious Simon.
My hopes that this would be done in a manner deserving of a coo attempt discovered in a major gang, such as the Aryan Brotherhood or a 1% MC were rewarded. Negan not only resisted the temptation of bashing in Simon's skull with Lucielle while walking around the meeting table with bat in hand reminiscent of a mafia movie, but he actually gives Simon a chance by fighting him mano a mano, sans weapons, in front of everyone to prove once and for all who was toughest and therefore most deserving to be leader of the Saviours.
Negan quotes Ric Flair: "If you want to be the man, you've got to beat the man".
Not unexpectedly Simon started with a sucker punch and momentarily appeared to be winning a fairly even blow for blow battle until Negan quickly combined a head butt with a leg sweep putting Simon on his back essentially finishing the fight as all that was left was for Negan to choke out Simon who if nothing else provided a good character study of someone with the backbone to not just fantasize about going from follower to leader but actually attempted to bring his plan to fruition. RIP Simon!
Bravo! The rest of this episode was basically filler, at least to me.
Pro: Benedict Eugene making good use of his sardine diet and a pile of human ashes, making a "Rick Speech" to his workers solidifying he is Negan as Daryl and Rositta confirmed his treachery is now beyond the point of return with Rick's group, Negan stringing along and setting up Dwight (who I REALLY like) and Gregory (who I really don't), Walker Simon tied to the fence.
Con: Coral's sappy letters to begin and end the show (your mileage may vary but please just let it go already NO ONE is listening to them), the Ocean Side chicks who hate men even those of Aaron's persuasion (yah I know, I know they will show up for the final fight), people complaining about "bad 1 star" reviews- if you haven't figured out its one dude with multiple accounts, just ignore least you give him the attention he craves, please at least think about it.
