Unusual but flawed!

Warning: Spoilers
"A Concert for Alice" is a Swiss German film made in Zurich in 1985. The plot revolves around a Russian Jewish flautist who is reduced to playing in the streets in order to raise some money to put on a concert for a fellow busking flautist.

To me, it looks like a television movie. It features a multitude of close-ups and has only a moderate -- although nicely realized -- budget which makes effective use of real-life locations.

On the other hand, although there are some effective character studies, surely the plot could have been most satisfactorily resolved without recourse to that totally hoary and utterly unbelievable "Guardsman" device?
