Non-prosecution of hate crimes
22 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was ready to give it 8 stars because it is a compelling, gritty detective series. I wish I didn't feel conflicted about liking the series, I resisted watching it for a long time. But I found it disturbing that the racial hate crimes went unpunished. Lucas tries to set Kaled on fire, but is never prosecuted for a hate crime. Okay he has a change of heart and undergoes a metamorphosis into a likeable character eschewing his neo nazi past, falling in love with Fara - as far-fetched as it seems. What about Pilar? She is so full of hate & does evil things but in the end comes out fine!? And the other neo-nazis in the group - they all run amok with impunity. Fara is kidnapped but her persecutor is never caught! The Guineans Teo & his friend are knifed and shot. In the scene where Teo is shot, you don't even see an ambulance called for help. We don't know what happens to Teo & his friends - one knifed previously, another shot in the leg by Lolo and Teo himself shot by Lolo 'cause he is threatening Lola. They are never shown in the subsequent episodes? Did they survive? Are they returned to Guinea? Are they prosecuted? The scene where blacks & gypsies have a mob fight is dismissed by the hero Hector as a street fight and not their concern!? Holy cow!! What is the series trying to tell us? i. That it is okay to do turn the other way when non-whites are involved in brawls? ii. You can do what you wish as long as you are white? iii. What lawlessness is this? It shocked me that such hate crimes went unpunished. Thank goodness that I live in North America - both USA & Canada have zero tolerance for such vituperative bigotry. Makes me nervous to visit Spain as a brown skinned person. All these issues could have been handled better in the script and they would have a cutting-edge series instead of bitterly disappointing.
