The writers speaking on the DVD commentary seemed quite proud of the fact this episode keeps you guessing in terms of where the plot is going. I'm glad they're proud of that fact, but for me this was a messy episode of the once great show, that tried to do too much in too short a time.
Bart stealing the sign - it's funny, and yes it leads to the episodes climax - but why is it important? The ending is sweet, but there's too many wanderings in the plot and the secondary characters getting all the best laughs.
It's average modern 'Simpsons' basically.
