Another very weak German relationship comedy
8 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Irre sind männlich" is a German movie from 2014 that runs for slightly under 90 minutes without credits and slightly over with credits. The director is Anno Saul and he is kinda known for his works, at least here in Germany, and I also like some of the stuff he has done. But this one here is a major disappointment. Then again, I cannot really blame him as he is not one of the writers. This film here is pretty much on the level of all the M'Barek, Schweighöfer comedies (and weak Schweiger comedies) that came out over the last decade. Fittingly, Schweighöfer is also in this one, even if he only has a very brief cameo, but I guess him and Peschel are almost always together in movies. So I already mentioned Milan Peschel who is a much better actor than what he shows us here. He is the co-lead to Fahri Yardim in here and a big part of the film is about their relationship struggles. The problem once again is that I did not like any of the two protagonists really. How can you with the stuff they've been doing early, pretending to be somebody else on so many occasions in order to have sex with as many women as possible? I find it despicable and their (not realistic) character transformation does not make up for it.

Anyway, so the story is crap. Is the comedy at least good? No it is not. The writers' attempts at including funny scenes are easily visible, but hardly anything is working out in this one. And the consequence is that this is not just another weak film, but actually really embarrassing on several occasions. This is especially shocking as the screen writers are both pretty experienced from what I have seen. The music in this movie isn't good either. But back to the action: The worst moment of the film is probably when the group reenacts a metaphorical scene that involves the likes of libido, unerect male genitalia, wet female genitalia and more stuff like that. Then again, can you really be surprised if there is a cast that features Marie Bäumer and Tom Beck in key roles, even if you have to say they aren't worse than the script. And Yardim is not exactly a revelation either in terms of range. But still, the film thinks it can take itself seriously on some occasions in terms of conflict, for example a possibly lost friendship or a lost love. Or the ending when they rush an arrest (that is certainly unjustified as the female protagonist would never ever have agreed to a written statement according to which Yardim's character needs to stay away from her) and right away they meet in the most cheesy fashion on this bridge like taken from a cringeworthy Rosamunde Pilcher movie. So yeah, I think I've made my point that these 1.5 hours were extremely disappointing in my opinion. I suggest you stay far far away from this one.
