THE DYNAMITE TRIO is a dullish Hong Kong kung fu film, lensed in Taiwan to give it that cheap outdoor look. The starring roles go to Dragon Lee and Mark Long, with a supporting part for Jacky Chek, somebody I never heard of before but who seems to be your usual garden variety Jackie Chan impersonator. The director, Danny Cheng, seems to have been something of an unknown quantity, going on to film the martial arts scenes in Godfrey Ho's gloriously stupid trilogy of SCORPION THUNDERBOLT, NINJA THUNDERBOLT, and MAJESTIC THUNDERBOLT, but seemingly having no cinematic career beyond that.
The story is barely existent and seems to have been made up on the spot. It involves a ruthless martial arts master who's so good that he only uses a single hand to fight with. He's looking for a secret training manual on the mantis style which will make him even more deadly (like he needs it), but a couple of those youthful, bumbling, erstwhile hero types stand in his way. Sadly, THE DYNAMITE TRIO is an entirely cheap piece of film-making and the frequent action scenes are hardly anything to get excited about. The usual revenge-for-my-father's death scenario is played out yet again and a good master wears the fakest wig ever. It's only at the frenetic three-on-one climax that THE DYNAMITE TRIO shines, and even then it's only in a mild way.
