Review of Merry Andrew

Merry Andrew (1958)
7/10
Silly, but fun

This is a very silly movie. It is also great fun. It was made in 1958. A lot of the humour revolves around exaggerated racial stereotypes, which you could do back then. The adults are all quite physically affectionate with the kids. As times have changed, these scenes feel quite awkward.

The music is terrible, amateurish and tuneless though the lyrics are clever with all kinds of three-syllable rhymes. The Pythagoras song is too corny and too unpedagogical for words. I felt embarrassed.

Angelina the chimpanzee steals the show. I don't know how they got her to do such complex actions.

Danny Kaye is full of energy and warmth and appears to do many of his own stunts. When I was a little boy, I quite liked him. My mother disapproved, suggesting he must be homosexual the way he carries on.

The theme is following your heart and breaking convention -- a lovely subversive message for children.
