Mr Poliakoff comes up trumps once again, Shooting the past is an exquisite drama, a little story one could argue, which becomes something magical, the past is brought to the future in the incredibly moving way that only Poliakoff can do. A tale which is seemingly a big American business crushing a sleepy English library of rare photographs becomes a truly deep character study.
The story becomes engaging within seconds, you instantly feel that the characters are real people, they matter somehow. From crazy Oswald, the thoroughly British, stubborn Marilyn to the American businessman beautifully portrayed by Liam Cunningham. The acting is a joy, Poliakoff knows who to cast in his productions, it's easy to see why he sticks with Lindsay Duncan, she is a magical actress. Spall, Fox, Whitelaw are all tremendous.
The ending is simply captivating, you watch in awe, how can a TV drama possibly evoke such feelings?
It's moving, the kind of drama you engage with and forget about everything else. I find myself not wanting it to end, it is utterly magical. 10/10
