Warning: Spoilers
Although the age gap is dealt with nicely in the film, we still have a silly, inane farce where con man, George C. Scott, takes in an army deserter played by Michael Sarrazin.

Scott is a master at engineering and carrying out various scams and he teaches Sarrazin the tricks of the trade.

We do have funny chase scenes but supporting players such as Jack Albertson, Sue Lyon and Alice Ghostley are not effectively used here as their characters all needed further development.

The ending just shows you the rapport that the Scott-Sarrazin team has established, as Scott is allowed to go on his way.

Harry Morgan is somewhat funny as the sheriff in hot pursuit of the two.
