Warning: Spoilers
"Gauguin" is a 12-minute black-and-white documentary short film from 1950, so this one had its 65th anniversary last year. It was directed by Alain Resnais and written by Paul Diehl. Two years earlier, this duo worked together on an equally short Van Gogh documentary that ended up winning an Oscar, but this one we have here was not as successful. The approach is pretty much the same though. We see mostly paintings by Gauguin while a narrator (successful actor Jean Servais) narrates about the artist's life. I don#t think this is a film that will get you interested in the artist, but it can be a good watch if you appreciate him already. I did not and that's why I enjoyed the watch not too much. I also think, just like with "Van Gogh", one major problem here is the lack of color as this would really elevate the material when it comes to making a film about a famous painter. I personally give ti a thumbs-down. Not recommended unless you really enjoyed the filmmaking duo's previous collaboration.
