Emergency!: Survival on Charter #220 (1978)
Season 7, Episode 3
8/10
Filming Location / 1986 Aeromexico Crash over Cerritos, CA
29 March 2016
Even though I was 8 years old when this episode first aired, I do remember it. I just watched it again on MeTV. (Netflix doesn't have any of the later episodes.)

This episode reminds me so much of the midair Aeromexico collision and crash in Cerritos, CA, that happened on August 31, 1986. A small plane (Piper PA-28-181 Archer) collided with the Aeromexico flight (DC9) over a residential area. The aftermath was much more horrific than the staged "Charter 200" crash.

I've driven through the neighborhood in Cerritos where the Aeromexico crash happened. There's no marker to memorialize what took place there. If you knew about the tragedy, you would notice the newer homes that replaced the structures that were damaged or destroyed. After 30 years, it's probably less noticeable now.

I read that Survival on Charter 220 was filmed in a neighborhood of abandoned homes in Compton, CA. The only street sign I could see throughout this episode was Lowbrook and Laurel. (Lowbrook is actually Willowbrook. Someone placed tape over that sign in an attempt to disguise it.) Willowbrook and Laurel no longer cross because of a new housing development that has since been built on the filming location. The cross streets are S. Willowbrook Avenue and E. Myrrh Street in Compton. If you Google Earth the location, you can see the Compton Court House to the left. This building was visible in many scenes. Many of the aerial shots were probably filmed from the roof.
