Backcountry (I) (2014)
6/10
A survivor is born
10 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Initially,I didn't expected much from this movie but as the bear appeared,it scared me more than the movies featuring supernatural entities.Cannot term it as a horror movie but more thriller/suspense and will stay with you for days! Had me terrified though.

|-- Alex (Jeff Roop) takes his girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) for camping in Canadian woods and to show her "Blackfoot Trail" -his favorite childhood place. Before entering the park they take the permission of the Park Ranger(Nicholas Campbell) and its when the ranger offers Alex a trail map,but the latter denies.

The next 35 minutes are all about setting up a camp, meeting an Irish guide name Brad(Eric Balfour),having a heated up dinner with him,Alex breaking his toe nail, realizing something is wrong with the campsite,Alex claiming that he knows the path to "Blackfoot Trail" and after a while realizing that he messed up.

Soon after they both realize that they are lost, unknown to them they built a new campsite in the Black bear County. Its during the night we viewers get a little shadowy glimpse of a Black bear.Later, the next day they too understand the level of situation they are in after seeing a Bear bed. The next morning as they wake up,Alex tries to head out of the tent but sees a Bear sniffing around and zips up the tent.

This is the most terrifying scene where they both are attacked by the bear,it first attacks Jenn and breaks her arm and he gets hold of Alex's leg but Jenn sprays the bear spray and scares him away. But the bear returns and drags Alex out of tent and mows him in a very(You better watch it) way. Jenn runs out of the tent and seeing Alex dead she grabs the ring from the bag and runs deep into the forest.

Even in such an intense situation where a Black bear is behind Jenn, she buys some time and haves a look at the ring, feeling sorry for not accepting the ring before. As she is on her way,she comes across another bear(maybe the same, who knows) which chases her to a waterfall(what can be more terrifying that a bear chasing you)She tries to get down from the side of the waterfall but slips and fells down and breaks her legs.Tying two sticks to the side of the broken leg she moves ahead.

Later, she finds the Canoe, which Alex dragged to the bank of the river and from which they initially came to woods. She drives the canoe to the dock and fells on the ground.

AND A SURVIVOR IS BORN. In the background Brad is addressing a group of hikers,a girl from the group bring to his attention about Jenn. Brad run to her aid and the screen blackouts( Question: Why didn't the other hikers ran with Brad to the aid of an injured woman rather than staying behind?). --|

I loved the movie for its patience of 45 minutes.Had only 5 main actors delivering dialogs(Alex,Jenn,Ranger,Brad and Black Bear). This movie will keep you at edge of seat,as you cannot guess what will happen next.Very good performance from the lead actors. The camera work was excellent.Though the movie should have been much longer,it would have been more terrifying to watch. Good movie not the best, but still good as debut director form Adam MacDonald.

Conclusion: .... Listen to those who say,'Need a map?'
