Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
4 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In the world of Orario adventurers working for gods fight monsters in the 'dungeon'. Most adventurers work in large groups called 'familias' which serve a single deity but our protagonist, Bell Cranel, is in a familia of one serving the goddess Hestia. Bell is a junior adventurer who falls in love with Aiz Wallenstein, a senior adventurer who rescues him one day in the dungeon; shortly afterwards a new power is awakened and he rapidly improves in skill. Armed with a better weapon he takes on a supported (bag carrier) named Liliruca, unaware that she has another motive for working with him; a motive that will put him in danger. Over the course of the series he will have to win her over and defeat a number of dangerous monsters as well as avoid falling victim to rival adventurers who are suspicious of how quickly he is progressing.

In many ways this is a fairly typical fantasy adventure anime; our protagonists starts off fairly weak but progresses to become the strongest while attracting a harem of female fans and different powered monsters living in different levels of the dungeon… almost like a video game. However despite these clichés I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Bell is a likable protagonist and even as he becomes more powerful he doesn't become annoyingly arrogant. The rest of the cast are good too; especially Hestia and Liliruca. Even though we don't doubt Bell will win his fights they are still exciting thanks to some pretty good animation. The character designs are distinctive so there is little danger of confusing anybody. Overall this is worth watching for people who like action anime in a fantasy setting; it is just a pity that it was only one season.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
